PTSD and GUT HEALTH
Many of us are aware there's a strong link between GUT HEALTH and MENTAL HEALTH, but did you know that "bullet-proofing" your gut with treatments like a high-quality probiotic or prebiotic could be the key to mental toughness and resilience to stress and trauma?
In a 2016 study, Canadian Psychologists hypothesized that "imbalanced gut microbiota in early life may have long-lasting immune and other physiologic effects that make individuals more susceptible to develop PTSD after a traumatic event and contribute to the disorder. This suggests that it may be possible to target abnormalities in these systems by manipulation of certain gut bacterial communities directly through supplementation or indirectly by dietary and other novel approaches."
So What does this mean?
It's no secret that the balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut is very important. If this balance is off, it can cause lasting problems with your immune system and how your body functions.
But now we know these problems could make you more likely to develop PTSD after experiencing a traumatic event.
The good news? This suggests we might be able to treat or even prevent PTSD by improving gut health. This could be done by taking specific supplements (like probiotics) or by changing your diet to encourage healthier gut bacteria.
